Getting the Most from Your Bathroom Lighting
Good lighting is
essential for your bathroom since you typically
will need to be able to apply makeup or shave
without incident.
Since everyone has different tastes, many
different types of bathroom décor are available.
Regardless of bathroom décor, however, one thing
is constant: the need for good lighting. It
should be clear and sharp. For good bathroom
lighting, the right fixtures can make all the
difference.
Remember that when choosing your bathroom light
fixtures, your real goal is to make yourself
look great. Of course, you want your bathroom to
look great, too, but in practical terms,
function is more important than fluff. Your
bathroom light fixtures should help you attend
to grooming and looking your best when you step
out into the world.
Have you ever walked into a bathroom where the
lighting makes you look anemic or green? Or
where the lighting is so bad you can barely see
whether your hair is passable or whether your
makeup is appropriate for the occasion? Good
vanity or mirror lighting is crucial to good
grooming. The lighting should not only be
sufficient in quantity, but also in quality.
Choose bulbs that emit light as close to the
spectrum of natural light as possible.
Without clear, properly placed lighting in a
bathroom, you won’t be able to look your best
outside of the bathroom. If the lighting casts
shadows, you won’t be able to see yourself well
enough to apply makeup. The need for clear
lighting without shadows is what makes bathroom
light fixtures important. When choosing
fixtures, remember that the clearer the lens or
shade, the more light will be released into the
bathroom. Bathroom light fixtures should not
change the color of the light; instead, they
should release the light clearly and brightly.
Proper placement is essential. Ideally, your
face should be surrounded with the best light
possible. Shadows under the chin and eyes should
be minimal, and your cheeks and forehead should
be illuminated properly. While you don't need
Hollywood strips with six lights down each side
of the mirror, you definitely need more than one
bathroom light fixture. You should have at least
two, one on either side of the mirror. They
should be placed at least two and a half feet
apart, which is the width of the average
bathroom mirror, and at the average forehead
height of family members to minimize shadows on
the face. They shouldn’t be placed above the
head.
Bathroom light fixtures can be mounted directly
on the mirror. However, before doing this, look
at them against a mirror. Some styles don't look
good with this mounting.
If your bathroom is large or dark, you may want
to install an additional bathroom light fixture
on the ceiling. Always consider what kind of
lighting you want to use when choosing bathroom
light fixtures. Fluorescent lighting makes
people look greenish or washed out. Incandescent
bulbs, or bulbs with a spectrum close to natural
light, are better choices. The wrong bulb can
make anyone look terrible. You want your
lighting to make you look terrific. If you know
of a place with bathroom lights like these, find
out what kind of bulbs they use and go for them.
