Bathroom Mirrors Add to Lighting Functions

Bathroom mirrors come in many different shapes, sizes, and styles: rectangular, round, oval, special shapes, with and without frames, and large to small.

Decorative wall light fixtures mounted on each side of a standard mirror will illuminate both sides of the face evenly, without shadows. A wall bracket lighting fixture can also be mounted across the top of the mirror. Fixtures using incandescent bulbs behind glass or plastic diffusers emit the most flattering light.

The main function of a mirror, of course, is to reflect light. While all objects reflect some amount of light (or else they could not be seen), mirrors are made to reflect light to such a degree that they reproduce the pattern of whatever is in front of them. Mirrors can be used in many different ways; for example, if a mirror is positioned to reflect a window, it will bring the outdoors inside. Decorative bathroom mirror arrangements can lighten, brighten, and cheer up a bathroom. You also have the option of extendable, lighted magnifying bath mirrors in a variety of finishes. Decorative mirrors range greatly in price.

An important element in design, mirrors can completely change the look of the bathroom. A mirror may be used to accent a favorite object in the room, increasing its presence. The styles of the mirror, vanity, and lighting fixtures should all match. Traditional styles of mirrors look best framed, especially when an oval shape. Contemporary styles, circular or rectangular in shape, look good unframed and beveled.

The mirror frame should be matched to the vanity cabinetry to give a harmonious look. The vanity size will determine the size of the mirror. The bathroom mirror should never extend beyond the sides of the vanity. If light fixtures are installed on either side of the mirror, the outside edge of the lights may slightly exceed the width of the vanity and still look good. In a small bathroom, mirror sidelights can illuminate the entire room, but in large bathrooms, a ceiling light fixture is also needed to provide sufficient general lighting.
