Choosing the Correct Interior Lighting

The lighting in a room has a major impact on how we see the things around us.

With this fact in mind, you should consider the effect of light on the space, colors, shadows, and sizes of objects in an interior decorating project. A lighting fixture should not cause eye strain or glare. Also, the light should fall at the right angle, otherwise it will reveal imperfections in flat surfaces by causing shadows that highlight flaws. When the light is uniform, it sometimes makes three-dimensional objects appear flat. By focusing a lot of light on a low ceiling, you can make it appear higher. Dim lighting makes the space in a room appear smaller.

Lighting Considerations

Professional photographers say that lighting is everything. You can always find a lighting fixture to create a particular mood in a room. Be sure to take the function of the room into consideration before you install a light fixture to set a particular tone.

For example, you wouldn’t want to use dim lighting that gives a romantic or sleepy feeling to a room that is meant for study or a home business. It would be difficult to remain mentally alert and you might not be able to see well enough to work. Conversely, a lot of bright fluorescent light in a sitting room meant for relaxing, listening to music, and watching TV, wouldn’t work either.

In commercial buildings and large houses, lighting uses the most electricity. You can save on your electric bills by using energy efficient lighting. You can easily buy and install inexpensive energy efficient light bulbs. You can also save on electricity by using task lighting, focusing the light only where you need it, instead of lighting up the entire room.

Some lights are so bright they may remind you of sitting in the dentist's chair. They can be harsh and make you feel uncomfortable. Such lights should only be used in department stores and supermarkets or surgical suites where strong light is needed. Dim lighting is common in restaurants to promote relaxation and intimacy, while harsh lighting is common in fast food places to keep people moving. The effects of different kinds of lighting, especially when combined with color, can be subtle.
