Your Guide To Bathroom Lighting And
fixtures
Your source for
information about bathroom lighting fixtures.
When designing a new home, bathroom lighting
is often neglected while lighting in the kitchen
and living room areas receives priority
attention. Yet we start our day in the bathroom,
grooming ourselves and preparing to meet the
outside world. Bathroom lighting can have a
great impact on how we feel and it can even
affect our self-confidence.
Good bathroom lighting is essential for proper
grooming, such as putting on makeup evenly,
combing our hair, and shaving. The bathroom
lighting for illuminating the head and face most
effectively is vanity or task lighting. Sconces
or vertical lighting strips on both sides of the
mirror spread the light evenly for facial
lighting. This may not work if the mirror is
very wide or if there is no room on the sides of
the mirror for installing lights. A strip of two
or more globe bulbs may be installed on top of
the mirror. Recessed fixtures will not work
because they cast shadows.
Lighting is needed for the shower unless the
stall door is made of clear or frosted glass.
Even then a recessed light may be needed above
the shower for adequate visibility. Recessed
lighting is often used over the tub or toilet. A
glass cover should be used instead of plastic,
as plastic will turn yellow over time with the
heat from the bulb and the humidity.
Natural lighting is always the best choice for
bathrooms, but many bathrooms do not have
windows or only have small, high windows. An
excellent option is a ceiling light mounted in
the center of the room with a bulb that emits
full spectrum light that is as close to sunlight
as possible. This will not only allow you to see
yourself as you will look outside, it will give
the atmosphere of the room an open effect. You
can use a variety of lighting options to enhance
your bathroom. You can end your day by dimming
the lights and enjoying a relaxing soak in the
tub and unwinding at your leisure.
